British Piano and Keyboard Tutors in America
britishpianolessons.com was founded in 2020 by concert pianist, Joshua Kelly, with the aim of bringing conservatoire level expertise and a quality of learning to beginners through to degree level students.
We strive to provide piano lessons which are tailored to your specific playing goals, whether you aim to play Classical, Jazz, or some of your favourite chart music. All of our tutors are fully qualified and experienced professionals having completed bachelors and masters degrees across the United Kingdom.
While our staff maintain a disciplined and focussed ethos, we also provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere and aim to put enjoyment at the forefront of our teaching methods, ensuring that you get the best experience possible with your piano lessons online.
All lessons take place online over “zoom”. Please read how this works for more information.
We offer a range of lesson lengths and services depending on your experience, age and ability.
30 minute lessons are our lowest tier, giving beginners of all ages enough personal contact time with their tutor to develop technique, practical and applied theory, general musicality and sight reading.
At our next tier, 45 minute lessons are aimed at the intermediate student pursuing higher graded exams (between 4 and 5) or a similar standard. This allows us more time and opportunity to further develop advanced practical techniques and theory.
Our highest tier, hourly lessons are aimed at advanced students who are doing higher grades (7 and 8), students taking diplomas, or university students who need advice or assistance with their performance or theoretical aspects of their degrees.
Lesson vouchers are a great way to give someone the gift of music for a special occasion. Please contact us for more information surrounding offers and deals regarding lesson vouchers, including the amount of lessons you would like.
30 minute lessons: $28 (recommended for beginners)
45 minute lessons: $37 (recommended for Grades V – VII)
60 minute lessons: $50 (recommended for Grade VIII and above)
Music theory lessons are priced the same as practical lessons.
Please contact us if you are unsure which bracket is most suited for you. You can always change the lesson length at a later time, or after discussing it with your tutor.
Yes. To ensure your lessons are tailored exactly to your requirements, we only conduct lessons on a one to one basis. This ensures that you have optimal time with your tutor and an ability to ask specific questions, receive personalised feedback and progress at a rate conducive to your needs.
Yes. Due to the nature of online lessons, we encourage parents/guardians to initially watch the proceedings of the lessons for younger children. This isn’t necessarily a permanent requirement, but would help ease the process at the start of their musical journey.
Privacy is always the key and the short answer is, no. All participants of a lesson are visible in the meeting window on ‘Zoom’, which will consist of several ‘participants’ by your tutor (for the several camera angles overlooking their hands, piano and music), yourself and possibly a parent/guardian if they wish. All meetings are encrypted with an individual access key.
The first lesson is absolutely free while we help you get setup with using our video software, ‘Zoom’. After this, you are welcome to pay either weekly or monthly via online banking.
While we appreciate that most students cancel due to circumstances beyond their control, we regrettably have to retain the whole lesson fee to cover the expenses of the facilities, tutor and missed lesson space for cancellations within 24 hours of your agreed lesson time. This helps us to run as efficiently as possible and, given enough notice, potentially open cancelled lessons to other students.
We will attempt to make up any lessons that are missed within the same week. This isn’t always possible, however, in which case the lesson will be forfeited by the student.
While most of our students are learning piano, we do have a number of students who are learning to play the keyboard.
Piano and keyboard technique are virtually synonymous, especially if you are a complete beginner. The most obvious difference is the type of repertoire you would be aiming towards and the exploration of different sounds. Usually our keyboard students are more interested in learning pop music, with some leaning towards Jazz.
Lesson lengths and prices remain the same for both piano and keyboard lessons.
Please contact us if you have any further enquiries.
Yes. While we provide our students with an understanding of the theoretical aspects of music in their practical lessons, we find that students sometimes prefer to opt for extra lessons in music theory as a supplement.
We also aid students who only want to study theory with us, or students preparing to take their ABRSM theory exams.
Absolutely not! We have a range of tutors who are fully equipped to teach beginners through to degree-level students.
We would suggest that children start no earlier than 7 years of age on this platform, due to the technology involved and discipline to sit and concentrate for extended periods of time without the physical presence of a tutor.
Absolutely not. Music is a passion that grips people at different times, under different circumstances. We have many adult students who have come to music fresh in retirement, picking it back up from their childhood, or to complete a certain life goal. Whatever your reason, it’s never too late to start learning something new!
